During his first year at Behrend College, William learned FORTRAN programming (FORTRAN IV with WATFIV-S). However, the first year's work/study program placed him in the Chemistry Department, where he learned to set up labs for the various professors. The second year's work/study was in the Department of Traffic Control, where he keypunched traffic registrations and violations.
